In considering Service wire to a residential building, would a hotel fall under a residence since many of the required codes concerning branch ckts are applied? Im asking if you can consider the 80% when sizing the service cable.
Thanks

I did a hotel recently made up of suites, where each was a considered dwelling unit. Each had living, sleeping, and permanent cooking facilities. I agree that is unusual, but not unheard of.

I also wonder what the 80% rule is.

But the structure itself is not a dwelling.

True, there are branch circuit requirements for the guest rooms themselves (210.60), but it has nothing to do with the service.

if you look at Table 220.12 you will see that Hotels are listed separate from dwelling units.

If you are talking about continuous loads then they can only be loaded to 80%.

Don't forget 210.52, 210.70, 210.8, 210.12, etc. These rooms met the Article 100 definition of a "dwelling unit", and we were required to meet most of the usual dwelling unit requirements. Loads were calculated according to dwelling unit methods, etc.
