Its been a long time since I've touched residential panels but I'm upgrading ours to a 400a. Are any of the current brands notably better than others or just stick with whatever I can get breakers for? Leaning towards the latter.

Thanks guys

I like Eaton BR as well because they are a quality product at a reasonable price. We have had these discussions before and everybody here has their favorite brand. If there is a trend, it would be "any brand except GE".

Big boxes are selling Homeline 20A GFCI breakers for $40.-, and Murray for $50.-, GE may be the only AFCI breaker that works with MWBC’s

If you want a "loadcenter" you probably only going to find 225 amp max for most of them.

If you are fine with a commercial grade panelboard you can find them in 400 and sometimes even 600 amp versions.

Most dwelling applications you probably better off with two 200 amp main breaker panels for your service if you need to go over the 225 amp level and up to 400 amps for your main supply. Not too often do you have an individual load that requires more then a 60 amp breaker at a dwelling. (I did not say you never have over 60 amps for feeders)
