Hello I have A home residential job that I gave A estimate on which I thought was cheap,
but when doing work for A friend it can sometimes be expensive because of A friendship,
it is A basement that is 23'x 30' room size
he wants 15# high hats, 10# outlets, 3# phone jacks, 3# cable hookups, one gfi in the bathroom,
one gfi in the laundry room, I gave him A price for $800.00 but he said that it was to much,
I thought that the price that I gave him was pretty good, And I would just like to get some input on what the other electricians would have gave him for A estimate, any input would greatly be appreciated. city ct"

Re: residential pricing for A friend in ct

$800 wouldn't even cover the installation of the 15 recessed fixtures! A blind quote based on your description would be closer to $2,000 at my prices.

P.S. whats with the capital "A"?

Re: residential pricing for A friend in ct

I would definitely pass that job up! He thinks $800 is too much! He's not going to be happy and you won't be either. If you want to stay friends come up with a "some other work has come up and I don't have time" or something similar. Get out of it gracefully and move on.

$800.00.? Too much? Aye Caramba!  With friends like that....... Let him get three estimates, average them out, do the work for 2/3 the cost. Or as I like to do, just say no!

Re: residential pricing for A friend in ct

just for fun, what does this friend do for a living, and how much money per year does he make? second, its bad business to do work for friends and worst for relatives. if your not into helping him for free/fun, then its best you dont get involved period!

Re: residential pricing for A friend in ct

Yeah 800$ is a great dealwith matrial overhead etc, you wouldnt be making hardly anything.

Workin for friends is usually a bad idea. I did a job for a friend once and surfaced mounted a panel on a furred out basement wall in a MECHANICAL room with a furnace and hot water tank in it. I got a call about a month later after a know it all buddy of his said it was hack-work because it was surfaced. Turned out he wants to cram a bath in that mech. room and wants the panel in the wall(it wouldn't fit anyhow). And you cant have a panel in a bath anyhow! GEE WHIZ

Thanks guys for some great advice, I will make sure to show my friend these response, And you are definently right when it comes to doing work for friends or family sometimes its better to say that I have to much work then to try And give them an affordable price"

Re: residential pricing for A friend in ct

The rough in would take 2 men a day and 1 man half day to trim.I did not see any mention of switch for cans or breaker.Rough guess material with can and cheap trim/bulb,recepts,wire $500 plus labor .I would not even touch that job at 800.
I see 20 man hours at min,At 35 hour it is 700 labor plus 800 mat. $1500 is a break even did him favor price.Adjust labor to prevailing rate.Don't forget travel time and doughnuts.

Re: residential pricing for A friend in ct

Give a price list of what the material would cost that he wants. Then have him call a second electrician and get there price and see which one he likes better.
