Could you please tell me what the specific NEC requirement is for spacing of electrical receptacles in a residence? As an architect, I've been told that it's 12 linear feet at the perimter of a room. But I'd like to know if that is based on actual code verbiage or a verbal rule-of-thumb. Thank you!

Re: Residential receptacles

Mario, this is a code requirement.

Article 210.52(A)(1)
Receptacles shall be installed so that no point measured horizontally along the floor line in any wall space is more than 1.8 m(6ft) from a receptacle outlet.

(2) Wall Space. As used in this section, a wall space shall include the following:

(1) Any space 600mm (2ft) or more in width (including space measured around corners) and unbroken along the floor line by doorways, fireplaces, and similar openings.

There are more requirements concerning receptacle placement in this article.

Re: Residential receptacles

Keep in mind that it's a lot easier (& cheaper) to add a few 'extra' receptacles at the start, than add them later.
Also, try to place them where they will be accessible. Simply applying the rule by measuring from the door and going around the room almost always results in the receptacle being behind the
furniture, rather than next to it!
