residential service size requirement/calculation

Guys, I remember reading in the NEC that the residential service size was to be the load calculation plus 5%. Is this correct? If so, what section of the NEC code was this mentioned?

There is no +5%. The load calculation based on Article 220 will determine the minimum service size.

Every time I heard about yet another urban legend code requirement I wonder how some of these off the wall legends become some ingrained. Some, like this one, are real head scratchers.

In a typical dwelling unit, the Article 220 calculations results in a service at least twice as large as actually needed.
