I have a colleague who has an old house with (1) meter and the service entrance conductors run from the meter to the basement. in the basement there are (4) 50A 120/240V single phase disconnect switches Under these disconnects there is a wireway where the service entrance conductors reside. Each one of the 50A disconnects is tapped from the service entrance conductors in the wireway.

He would like to add an Automatic Transfer Switch and a generator to feed the entire house (All four disconnects). I cannot figure out how to do this without adding a main disconnect just after the Meter.

If anyone can think of another compliant way to do this let me know.

Thanks,
-Ed

You either have to install a new main or use a 'service rated' ATS. That will become the service disconnect and the other equipment will have to be re-configured with isolated neutrals.

That is what I was thinking. Just going to bounce it off someone else before I tell him to call an electrician.

Thanks
