Hello, can anyone tell me if there are any fire resistant rating requirements for the electrical wiring used in hard-wired smoke detector installations? I am assuming Type NM-B is acceptable but I want to be sure.
The wiring method and fire rating is determined by the building construction type and not the loads to be served. Considering your question is in reference to a dwelling, NM cable is generally always permitted.
Please contact a licensed and insured electrical contractor when making any installations or when you have questions regarding your electrical system.
Since you are on this subject about hard-wired smoke detectors, I have a question. I had my house completely rewired and I wanted it done according to N.E.C.. My question is do smoke detectors have to be hard wired into the dwelling during a rewire job?
Thanks all. I ask because I need to have this done in my Single Family Home and do not want the inspection to fail. I?m remodeling the inside of my house and initially the guy at the code enforcement office told me that I didn't have to get new hard-wired smoke detectors unless I did not have any detectors at all in the first place. But my inspector says I need them installed. An electrician here in town indicated that it may be a requirement to use some kind of special wire with more fire tolerance. Not sure if he was licensed or not.
