The one line diagram for the 480v system on my ship calls out the length and wire size and has a resistor and inductor symbols. I am assuming this is because the wire has some resistance and can act as an inductor. A maritime student asked me about it and I don't understand well enough to explain it correctly. Its the first time I have seen this called out on a one line. Whats the best way to explain these symbols?

That is an engineering symbol for a conductor. These symbols are typically found on power analyisis software. During short circuit studies its important to show the conductors impedance, which is a resistance and an inductance in series.

Most software can be customized to reduce the amount of information, shown on the online. I have even changed this conductor symbol to be a straight line, so the oneline looks like a more typical construction drawing.
