Anything from standby Diesel generators to the supplying the utility grid.
In fact, almost all electrical generation.
In my experience, single-phase units are usually fairly small and often portable for the likes of residential back-up in the event of mains power failure or a local source where there is no utility power.
I'm sure others here can add more substance.
