Re: Responsible
The game is changed a bit if the project was designed, and the plans sealed, by a Licensed Professional Engineer. But what is not commonly understood in our industry is the legal meaning of the "seal." It does not mean, as may be commonly thought, that the engineer is certifying that the job was designed to applicable codes and standards, or that everything is correct and proper. The seal and signature mean one thing, and one thing only: ?This work was performed by me, or under my supervision.? Doesn?t this sound like, ?The lawsuit ends here?? I think it does, and I think it should. Our role as PEs is to safeguard the health and safety of the public. That role is shared by the electricians who perform the installation work and by the Inspectors who verify code compliance. Who is ?responsible?? We all are.
