Hello All,

I do mainly resi with some light commercial. I've done some small restaurants but power has always been there already. Anyway, my question is, I have a customer that is going to build a restaurant in a location. The landlord will provide 1 - 2" conduit stubbed into his future space. House power is 480 3 phase. My customer is going to need 2 - 200 amp 208/125 volt panels in his unit.

Can someone give me a "dirty" sketch of how this would be done. I'm assuming
-480 to his space into a disconnect
-disconnect Into transformer
-transformer into..... 2 - 200 amp panels?

Thanks in advance!

I would probably put in a 480/277 panel. Breaker to the transformer.
Use it for parking lot lighting at least.
Who knows they may end up with some 480V gear in there. Commercial coolers ect.....

Check on a outdoor main service disconnect. In my area the fire dept loves them and so does our electrical inspector on commercial jobs. I don't know about your area.

In the past while running 2 200A 208/120 panels I have been spec'ed 75KV transformers.

You need to figure your load though. Find out what is gas and what is electric.

That 75KV is coming from a set of engineered prints on a office buildings where space and separation for circuits was more of a concern than heavy loads.

I know on most jobs I always wish I had run at least one more underground for some piece of equipment or another. Or they move something......

I agree with the other posts. As Smart states, you have the basics, but as JP notes the first step is identify and calculate your load. See if any of it must or can be operated off 480v which will help with your transformer size. Confirm the voltage requirement on the equipment and see if it's all compatible with 208 volts.
Failure to do this homework First can lead to a disaster in the end.
