I just finished up a 9,000 sq ft home, utilized 5'' juno cans with 50 par 30 lamps. The owner spent quite a bit of time picking out floor stain, but did not look at his choice under the recess cans at night with no natural light, so I am in research mode. The best scenerio so far is the new Juno 5'' led in either the 3k or 3500k series, I think with a little work I can install a 5'' remodel through the existing plaster frame, but this will leave me no choice but to utilize both the old cans junction box and the remodel junction box. I have about 60 of these to do and feel this is the best solution with out demo of sheet rock, any violations I might be overlooking

That seems like an expensive change to only adjust the color slightly. The color of the PAR lamps you have now is close to the 3000K LED?s you are considering. Have you tried installing 65BR30 lamps to see if they like them better? Since you only have 60 recessed lights in a 9000? home I?m guessing that you must have quite a few surface mount fixtures. What type of lamp are they using? The LED?s are much more energy efficient but I wouldn?t replace all of the new lights installed with them if the only reason is a slight color change. The housings are going to run $120 - $150 plus the labor to install them.

the 60 cans are the only recess cans installed over the wood floor areas, and yes the par lamps are at about 2800, I installed 50w r 30 lamps this actually made the floor look red. The trim for this can also does not allow for a 65br30. I have also got some test lamps installed that are a dimmable PAR LED, but these are not the best looking options. Juno actually has three color choices in these LED and I was able to use the 3k sample as a mock up (there is a differance how much I don't know as I was holding the mock up to the ceiling)

A 60 led cans retro fitting will be quite a price to pay. Ugh...

Have you tried halogen bulbs or just standard incandescents.

Hi Dennis

He is currently using PAR 50 lamps and I haven?t run across any that were not Halogen. We are just finishing roughing in a house with 71 Juno IC20LED3K housings. I will be very interested to see how the lighting looks after trim out.

Hi Curt

They make BR30 50 watt incandescents

I suggested that he try a 65BR30 lamp but he said he tried 50R lamps and they made the floor look too red. The 50R?s should be the same color as the 65BR?s.

Yes, I see that now.. CFL's I'm sure are not an option esp. if dimming is desirable although Lutron now makes a dimmer for a specific Philipps CFL.

Curt, on the rough stage with the LED cans is the module with the nodes already installed and if so are you protecting the face in any way.

I have installed halagoen par 30 floods in the cans, I have also installed CFL just to try, I am limited in a sense such that all these cans are installed on a Homeworks system. I dont think price will be a limiting factoe on wether we proceed or not, just thinking about utilizing both junction boxes. I also have tried the BR30 50 watt, I think the CRI of all the lamps are close to the same.

I think the owner needs to talk with the interior designer. Sunlight at around 5500K is not something you'll match by changing lamps. You might be able to find a lamp and trim combination that make some improvement, but you'd probably have to use A lamps to have the trim color have much effect. I suspect that they will do better by changing wall, floor, and/or furnishing colors. A good ID should be able to come up with combinations that look good in both natural and artificial light.
