I have two three phase motors that are wired on one circuit. If the power is interrupted one of the motors reverses direction. I've never seen this before and just wondered if anyone else has ever had this problem?

Please give us more info. with what you have given, my first thought is "impossible".

What kind of equipment controls the motors? Is there a reversing starter?

Also, please explain the poll. It makes no sense to me.

Do you mean that one motor stops and reverses while the other one is still coasting or that, when re-energized, one starts going the wrong way? Or something else?

And do we really need a poll on this question?
Would you like me to insert a new poll, asking whether anyone thinks a poll is needed in this thread? :D

As it turns out, I took a poll of all persons sitting at my desk. By a vote of 1 to 0, it was decided that this thread does not need a poll. The voters declared that the laws of physics are not subject to the will of the voters. So I terminated the vote.

That, however, brings us back to a question asked several times already. Can you clarify the nature of the symptoms? For example,

1. What do you mean by an interruption of power? Less than one second, and power returns? Power lost long enough for both motors to come to a complete stop?

2. How long does the motor that is running in reverse continue to run in reverse? Continuously, until the STOP button is pushed? For a few seconds, and then it slows to a stop and starts running the right way again?

3. Have you seen this happen yourself, or are you reporting only what someone else has described to you?

4. Are there any secondary symptoms of a failure? Smoke? Excessive heat? Arcs and sparks?

More info is definitely needed, before we can help you.

I had one of our guys call about a month ago. He had a POCO shut down to install a transfer switch. He borrowed my rotation meter that morning. Said it was clock-wise before the shut down and clockwise after power up. Had 1 motor reversed.

I wasn't there and thought he was nuts.(and he may be)

Was he taped or not taped??? JK

Seems like there might be a problem with the contactor but more info would be nice as stated many time thus far. Do they run in one direction or do they run off a forward/reversing contactor?

The poll was still open when I posted, so it was someone before me.

And for some reason, I'm hungry for a thick burger. I wonder why?
