Inspector requires IC AT for recessed cans in this 1920s remodel✅
so my plan in bid was to have the drywaller‘s cut me some hatches after I’ve done layout for Recessed Cans

I’m at the supply house and there are compliant
retrofit cans
it would be so much better if I could just carefully holesaw remodel Cans

I always found the problem to be that the clips on the remodel cans don’t hold against the plaster ceiling so well because it’s kind of variable thickness on both sides of the sandwich
Anybody have any success with using a modern Nora remodel can in a plaster ceiling ??

One interesting method might be to cut a 6 inch hole for the 2 inch can through the plaster only
then come back with the smaller 2 inch hole saw for the lath

then put a drywall doughnut on the lathe

but then you still have the wooden lath on the top 💭 at least the lower trim ring would have a smooth surface to seat

I've bent out the retaining clips to allow for the thickness of the plaster and lathe. It's still kind of a fight but works.

Another big tip is to get a carbide grit hole saw to cut through just the plaster then switch to a standard tooth (but fairly fine tooth) for the lathe.

Another trick is to run a piercing screw through the clip and into the recessed housing to hold it down tightly; prevents the clip from snapping back out of place.

One thing I do sometimes if the housing does not seem solid is run a screw of appropriate length thru the top of the housing into the subfloor. Not sure if that is feasible with real tiny housings.

Great!
I got up in there and it looks like i can walk above half the cans so I will use some new construction cans from above if the lip will hang down enough. The Nora 4" shallow cans are specd for ceiling up to 1-5/8" thickness so I will try those before anything else using the tips you mentioned thanks!

I found a way to crawl up in there and install the new construction from the top down on most of them.
The other two i tore out a hatch. All new construction cans brcause the remodel cans just weren't going to stick

thanks guys!
