6. Can I replace the wiring running from my panel to lights and outlets, but leaving the wiring from switches ?
7. Can I replace some of the existing wiring and leaving some in place, or does it all have to come out?

Only if you ad outlets.

Depends where you live.

6. Can I replace the wiring running from my panel to lights and outlets, but leaving the wiring from switches ?
Sure, knock yourself out.

You don't have to do a thing if you don't want to.

Re: Rewiring a 1950's ranch-electrical code questions

Thanks Ray:

I've had 2 different electricians over to give me bids, and the above questions are a result of conflicting info given by both.

I'm going to call the city inspector tomorrow, but thought that you guys could help, as you have in the past.

Your help is very much appreciated.

One more question: Since it depends on where I live whether it's up to code to replace existing outlets with gfci, is it something that you would recommend, or be ok with ?

It is not up to me or any electrician it is a matter of what the code is in your state. I don't like the idea of replacing non grounding outlets with GFIs. I would much rather see 50+ year old wiring replaced but it is a matter of economics. You should ask the electrical inspector where you live what is allowed. Most places allow GFIs to replace non grounded outlets, but in my home state, Mass, they do not.

Todd,

The way the questions are asked you may not get the answers that you really need. There's really too many variables to go through here.

Good luck with the Inspector.
