Rigid coupling as locknut

I am comming into the side of a generator enclosure with a connector on the outside. I am switching to flex inside with a rigid coupling and flex connector. The enclosure is to thick to allow me to use a locknut on the inside and then screw the rigid coupling onto the end of the connector, I have skipped using the locknut and screwed the coupling straight to the conector. It makes the conector on the outside tight to the enclosure. Is this legal? Or is there a better way to do this? Thanks.
