Yes the NEC classifies it as RMC rigid metallic conduit. Ferrous would be Galvanized steel. Could also be aluminum, stainless or red brass and still be RMC.

Back in 1965 while attending a great Vo Tech school we had 1/2" black colored rigid conduit with what looked like a clear coating on OD. Believe it was only approved for dry locations. Our shop teacher said we were the lucky class because the city only purchased a railroad car of conduit for the three VoTech schools and for the city once every 18 months at a very good price.
