stupid question but friend was at HD and was picking up meter socket for service he is doing, and called and asked me what the difference is between a ring or ringless meter socket? . He said they looked the same, I wasnt to sure either, can any one fill me in please thanks alot.

It allows the utility to take the cover off and jumper service out when changing a meter. That way the customer does not have an interuption of power when a meter is exchanged.

I would have thought it referred to the ring that held the meter in place with a poco tab vs a non- ringed style which uses a poco tab to keep the meter area locked. Good stuff to know, thanks!

What do you mean by jumper service, so how could you tell the difference in them by looking at them, maybe my friend was missing something when he was explaining them to me, he said they looked the same, thanks for the replies

The actuall differences are characteristics of the meter base, not the meter.

The ring-type has you install the cover, plug in the meter, then install a metal ring than engages a lip around the cover opening and the meter's rim.

The ring's screw or snap-lever receives the tag. There is a sliding tab attached to the cover that prevents the cover from being removed with the meter in place.

A ringless meter has you plug in the meter, then install the cover. The meter is held in place by the cover. The cover can be removed with the meter still in place.

Most modern meter bases are of the ringless type these days. Fewer parts and easier to install and remove. Plus, the terminals are accessible without de-energizing the service.

Thanks Larry Fine I get it now thats kinda what I thought but he said the covers were the same, who knows being Home depot they were probly in the wrong boxes, thats happened before to many times thats why I go to the supply house instead.

You are speaking of a meter with a by-pass built in. PoCo can remove the cover, engage the by-pass leaver and pull the meter with out interruption

But I only have half of a phase if they or I where to go there, I frankly think of it as a ******* bar!

I thought a ring type meter base, you have to place the cover on the meter base before plugging the meter in then install an aluminum channeled strap that holds the meter in place, and that is what they actually install the seal on. On a ringless, you plug the meter in first and the cover is placed over the meter and it holds the meter in place, and they place the seal on the sliding latch of the cover itself.

Didn't I say that?

Our POCO does not allow ringless meter sockets as it does not allow for them to boot the meter then lock the ring.

Eric Stromer probably made a video on how to change services, cutting the lock, getting the boot off...........

Home Depot? you buy there? maybe a pvc part here and there, but never any other parts. Its all made cheaper. Get a part number from HD and then go to supply house and ask for same part number.
