What is the difference between a ringed and un-ringed meter box? I imagine it is the ring:grin:
What is the typical one used in residential?

you're right... the ring
some meter bases are designed for a ring to hold the meter, some do not require the ring.

On a ring type meter housing, the meter housing cover is installed first then the meter is installed and then a ring goes around both the meter and housing cover.
On a ringless meter housing, the meter goes in first then the cover fits over the meter.
