I'm looking at a project that requires a 4/0 conductor to be run vertically from telephone room to telephone room up a number of floors. This conductor will serve as a equipment grounding attachment source for all telephone rooms. There is a few existing cores in the concrete from floor to floor in the telephone rooms with exising communication cables in them. Is it code compliant for me to run this conductor in through those existing cores? I can't find anything in the NEC against it. Any help would be appreciated.

If this is a telephone CO they will have detailed standards, and NEC won't apply. I don't see a problem but moderator Dereck Campbell is the expert on that area. Send him a PM if he doesn't pick this up.

Only thing i see that might be violation is if it is running thru plenum area. Perhaps run a bare 4/0

been there done that

remember rolling 250 KCMIL off the reel in the parking lot
stripping insulation, and rolling back up

glad someone caught that before it was installed

Is this really considered an equipment ground or more of an intersystem bond?

I helped do this for a local telco back when there were whole rooms full of open circuit boards. Probably replaced with a desktop or two now. I suggested to the engineer in charge that we should remove all the neutral to EG jumpers at the receptacles. He looked at me like I was nuts. I tried.

Based on the '08 NEC, I believe this may qualify as an intersystem bond.

If they are actually looking to use this conductor as an equipment grounding conductor, there may be an issue as to where the termination is located.
See 250.130(A). I do not believe they can terminate to an electrode for the purpose of equipment grounding. If they want to use this conductor as a GEC, it is required to be bonded to the other electrodes, and I do not believe one can use the water pipe as a bonding means for other electrodes.
