What are the requirements of a riser rated cable? I have installed a fiber optic tie cable that is riser rated. Being riser rated, does it have anything to do with the physical protection of the cable? Can it be installed on a misc. use cable rack without concerns for mechanical failure . It is a soft sheathed, 12 strand cable. What article in the NEC addresses riser rated cable.

Re: Riser Rated Cable

Article 770 deals with optical fiber cable and raceways.

A riser rating has nothing to do with physical protection, but rather flame spread in vertical runs.

In many if not most instances optical fiber cables are installed in innerduct for physical protection.

Re: Riser Rated Cable

Code requirements are only concerned with fire protection and electrocution. You have a design issue. As stated, a "riser" rating?has to do with flame characteristics. Optical cable is sensitive to bend radius, and macro-bends (crushing). There are several methods available for fiber cable distribution which are out of the scope of NEC. Normally fiber has it's own dedicated distribution raceway which include inner-duct, and custom made fiber trough made by ADC and Newton Instrument Company.

BICSI and Telcordia cover installation and engineering practices for telecommunication systems including fiber distribution for a fee.
