Yes that would work. What size fuses are in the 600 amp switch? You'll need to know that to size your tap conductors (10%) using the 10' tap rule.
 
As infinity points out, if they are protected by a 600 amp fuse, the 10 ft tap rule would require the tap conductors be rated for at least 60 amps.
 
If the feeder is 600A, then it is likely a parallel set. Which of the parallel conductors will you tap? Shouldn't you tap both sets to draw equally (granted it is a small load, but technically can you just tap half of the feeder)?

Rob, I have a question, but it is probably dumb... if the output of the transformer is fused by a breaker, in this case, thirty amps, then dont you just need a disconnect on the other side for repair and replacement reasons and not for safety? Because the output of a transformer can only be from the load, and no matter what the input is, it will only provide the amps for the load out... if I remember my speaker theories from 45 years ago..lol... which is the last time I actually studied anything about transformers. So, Probably just being dumb here.

The diagram shows them output of the transformer being fused at 600 amps thus the problem. We have to address protecting "tap" conductors that are only protected by that overcurrent device..
 
So a couple of follow up questions.

So I'm tapping a 600a riser which( as mentioned) id more than likely parallel sets.

The tap conductors are 2 hots plus ground. How would that tap work if the riser is 3 hots and if parallel sets?
