I think it is going to be a very tough year for a lot of people, especially those in certain areas, and those catering to certain markets (such as "upscale" housing).

The rest of us may get by with just a tough year.

I just had to give two jobs away to another EC because I am going on Vacation. Service change/kitchen rough, and a rewire of a small Blimpie that had a small fire. About 8500 bucks. And when I get back I am going to have to put on rollerskates to catch up on other jobs. It seems to be picking up here in Northern New Jersey. I guess it has to do with what part of the country your in. If I keep getting work like this I am going to have to hire a helper.

I've got my plan already in place. I'm submitting a request for $35 billion from Obama to build a fancy, posh resort so the head honchos of all the big corporations (CitiBank, AIG, etc) can take a vacation and spend $900 for a haircut, and $1500 for a round of golf.....

It's getting beyond ridiculous here. I'm already lined up in another province and leaving weekend after next. Even farther north for me. They've got more work than they can shake a stick at. :D

Surf,
When the spring breaks, things will lighten up.
Our Union told me that it would be next year, but things will lighten up.

Get yourself together, and formulate a Plan "B".
Which could be working at odd jobs, drive a ForkLift part-time with a Temp agency.
One of my friends drives a ForkLift at night,
and works at his (now) part-time electrical job days.

I have an old friend, a Master, who is real short on work. He called me and offered to pull permits for me, just to get a days work from my contacts. He knows my quality electrical work and my aggressive attitude about seeking out small jobs that may turn into larger ones. So, now I will invite my Master friend to handle a prospective job,
rather than referring it to any former employer. I am basically trying to 'make a job' for myself, and my Master friend. A little hit-and-miss work like that and we will both make it through these tough times.

I'm as healthy as a horse, and have three college degrees, can quote NEC,
but due to 'age', I'm working my Plan "B".

Get with a Career Transition Group and talk about methods and alternatives.
Give me an email and I'll give you more info on Career Transition Groups
which you can tag by iNet.

Live your life and career with a positive attitude.

They don't call me a "Sparky" for nothing!
Good Luck, man.

P.S. Guess you'll have to Private Mail to me.
I think that email addresses are not allowed.

The up scale housing market, is always the best paying in both good and bad times, and even now they are where we get the most calls,
the low end market is in the dumps, and no supprise, we went thru 4 of these cycles, oveer the years, the 82 slide lasted 2 years, and then recovered overnight, I think this one is going to be more like an L shaped recovery, long and slow to recover, but just like in all the others, segments of the country will recover faster, My opinion is, the faster and the more bankers, and brokers we lock up the faster the recovery.

Maybe Surf should think about traveling/moving to another area.
That's just an 'alternative' thought.

I have thought about moving to Atlanta, or Tallahassee.
My brother invited me to move to San Antonio,
live in his ranches 'bunk house' if things really drop out.
He says they are looking for electricians in the newspaper every week.

Just a 'Hopeful' thought.

By upscale, I am thinking all the houses bought by people with cheap money they could not really afford. I suspect that money for that kind of thing is going to be in short supply.

People will still need to live somewhere so more modest homes will probably come back sooner than the McMansions.

Yea! Hire some hard nosed AHJ types to supervise Wall Street.

My first employeer, Archibald Smith, of Smith & Keene, in Virginia, 1958,
told me that things would "lighten up in the Spring".
I was always the last to be laid off,
and the first young "helper" to be called back.

Stay away from Atlanta. While I am 150 miles away, I spoke with a sales rep today (I know him from his former job) that sells construction materials. He said the closer you get to Atlanta, the worse it gets business wise. The way he described it, I feel sorry for you folks in northern GA.

To those guys who are reporting they are getting lots of work, may I ask - have you had to reduce your prices at all to get this work? Have you experienced the fierce competition that many in the business are experiencing right now?

The bad part is (well not bad for you I guess) but the bad part is that might not have such a bad shot of working. :D

I just got laid off today. I'm loving it. I have lots of time to study my new Mike Holt's Estimating DVD, and hitting the surf before everyone else gets on it.

If you want this plan to really take off you better include congressmen.

The funny part is that the regulators are the 1's that told the banks and brokerages that if they wanted their loans to be insured that they would loosen their restrictions so everyone could get a loan to become a homeowner. Now that fact is hidden beneath the money that has been thrown at them to try to fix that initiative. Let's not forget the fact that what the mortgage industry did was sell product. Customers walked in the door and said "I want to buy this" and the mortgage industry said "OK" and delivered it.

I talked with our cheif estimator earlier this week, and he said there was plenty of work to bid, but a lot of contractors are cutting their prices to get it. Jobs that used to go for around $260 thousand are now going for $200-225thousand. $40-60 thousand out of a job is a good chunk, material and labor costs are not going down, and you can cut only so much overhead. The customers are loving it because their getting good deals.
