Is romex allowed above a residential supended ceiling? Does it have to be fastened to something like the old ceiling? Can you give me a code number?
Thanks guys!

it would help to know which edition of the NEC you are working under but I would suggest 334.10 an 12.

YEP!
334.15 A 2 not allowed in OTHER THAN ONE AND TWO AND MULITIFAMILY DWELLINGS

334.15 A Follow the surface of the structure or on runners
Thanks again:)

I've done it before, that doesnt make it right. Is it legal, or is your inspector a little lax? Didnt think states had the right to decide what part of the NEC they didnt want to adopt. Big brother is an SOG !

In NJ , the legistrative branch votes on what parts of the latest edition of the NEC they will adopt. It's called the NJ Adminstrative Code which entails rehab, renovations, new work, etc.

This is from the Mass code

334.12(A)(2). Revise to read as follows:

(2) In dropped or suspended ceilings in other than one- and two-family and multifamily
dwellings, unless run so as to closely follow the surface of framing members, running boards,
or the equivalent, or unless connected to luminaires or other pieces of electrical equipment in
accordance with 334.30(B)(2).

Uses permitted is 334.10 , 334.10 (1) and (2)indicate that NM is allowed in dwelling type structures, (2) has some restrictions on building types.

334.10 (2) also states "Multifamily dwellings permitted to be of Types III, IV, and V construction except as prohibited in 334.12."
334.12 (A) (2) allows NM in suspended ceilings of dwellings as follows "Exposed in dropped or suspended ceilings in other than one- and two-family and multifamily dwellings"e

Above a suspended ceiling is considered an exposed location. So yes, 334.15 applies in those areas. But I have never heard that it did not??
