I am looking in the 2002 NEC book.

Where does BX cable and Romex fall under?

Is BC under Article 330 Metal-clad; type MC?
Is Romex under Article 334 Nonmetallic-Sheathe cable?

Re: Romex and BX NEC clasification

BX ~ 320 (listed as type AC - Armored cable)
MC ~ 330
Romex ~ 334

The 2002 handbook has pics of type AC and MC..if you happen to have a copy laying about.

Romex ~ 334
In article 334, I am unable to find info about wet location or exposure.

Here is the situation I am doing a rip out and re-wire of a house that was submerged in water. The basement was completely submerged and the 1st floor was submerged 5' from the floor. Half of the ckts that went under water are in Romex and the other half in BX. The inspector says that all of the wiring that was exposed to water needs to be replaced. This is a friend of the family and I am trying to save them a buck or two.

Is it by code that if both BX and Romex go under water that they both need be replaced?

Re: Romex and BX NEC clasification

I just had my questions answered by a local inspector.

For anyone curious: All Romex will have to be replaced. Any old style BX with cloth or paper will also need to be replaced.

Re: Romex and BX NEC clasification

334.10(d) requires RX to be be installed where not exposed to excessive mositure or dampness

320.10(3) requires AC/BX to be installed in dry locations

(the handbook on CD is a great time saving tool)

Is it by code that if both BX and Romex go under water that they both need be replaced?
The AHJ may want you prove the insulation hasn't been compromised. That could run into some bucks...pay for testing, failed cables need to be replaced. Changing them may just be cheapest way to go...how much is a 1000' roll of 12/2 RX? ($200?)

The AHJ is actually the one who wants it all replaced. I was trying to save a buck for the home owner. The code is what it is. I guess it will all have to replaced.

No big deal on my part.
