Romex around Steel Pole

Location
Norwalk, CT
Occupation
Journeyman Electrician
Would you guys, or do we need to, protect the romex from being against the steel pole? I feel like just in case I should put something behind it.

Would cardboard be ok or would moisture be a potential issue?

Is that a barbell?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this has been converted to a gym? Are you going to drywall?

I think you are going to need to use a method suitable for the location it's in. I don't think NM / Romex is it. It won't take much for the weights or bars to be leaned up against it and damage it. Also, any portion not recessed a 1.25" will need a cover plate. 300.4(A)(1) / 334.15(B). Romex shouldn't be in a location that can be damp or wet (334.12(B)(4). The implication of putting cardboard to avoid moisture build up would imply you think condensation will be a factor.

Also, update your profession or they will lock out the post. This forum is not for DIY.

Not a gym. Yes sheetrocked

What makes you think there will be moisture involved? But that's beside the point. You can't get a 4" lally column in a 2x4 partition and certainly the NM you have wrapped around it makes it even worse. No way will you be able to put sheet rock over it without a bulge which means that it does not meet the 1-1/2" rule. Up, through the joists, past the column and back down, dude.

If it's a true Lally column, as in jack adjustable, they are not code approved for permanent installation under the IBC or IRC.
There not the jack type right there in post #8. As Hal stated the 4" Lally column in a wall made up with 3½" wood studs is going to be problem.

Right, see the header? Its sticking out like an inch. Contractor is going to be furying that wall out to hide the pole so technically the wires will have that 1.5" clearance
