The proper term is equipment grounding conductor (EGC) and the cable is called NM cable in the NEC. Romex is a brand name.

Do you know of an example of a manufacturer who makes equivalent NM cable, that isn't called Romex?

Or is this a term like Velcro or chapstick, that has somehow become the de-facto name for it, despite being a brand name?

Yes. Essex does.

Then there is also Encore, Cerrowire, Colonial and General cable (not sure though if either of those last two guys are still around or used much anymore??).

And there were many other brand names of nm cable from other manufacturers that have long since died off/been absorbed by one of the few survivors still around today.

It looks like I edited my post while you were making yours. I edited it because I found a link to Cerro but couldn't find one for Essex that wasn't on Ebay.

There was also Anaconda. We had an Anaconda wire factory in Muskegon years ago.

https://blogs.chapman.edu/dodge/2015/07/06/a-brief-history-of-the-anaconda-wire-and-cable-company/

The company, one of the community’s largest industries, dates its history way back to 1919, when a group of young men from Muskegon, MI, saw a bright future in the production of copper wire in their hometown. At the forefront of this group was Albert Maring, a young, inventive genius who had several years’ experience in the field of wire production.

I just googled Essex wire and cable and came across a Southwire release about them buying Essex out, but I didn't see when that was exactly. News to me- thought Essex was still around.

And so another one bites the dust....:)

There are quite a few and given that this thread was started by an apprentice it's best to try and use the correct terminology. Certainly Romex isn't in the code book. :)

I think Essex sold off its commodity/building wire business to Southwire but still makes a few specialty products.

General Cable was bought by Southwire.

Not exactly. Southwire purchased the Building Wire division from General Cable. Recently General Cable decided to get back into the building wire business. They don't offer all the products they sold off to Southwire but do have THHN/THWN, XHHW and a few others.

Isn't Southwire buying just about everyone to gain even more market share? About five years ago they bought a local wire and cable manufacturer, now that plant is gone.

Yes, I think I remembered that after I posted as I have seen General Cable wire recently.

Thanks.

So true Romex was made at one time by General cable.

I was referencing some nm I've seen before that was marked General cable, but had
no "brand" name otherwise (probably actually did, just didn't pay attention or notice:p).

Probably- there running out of competitors in the nm market, thats for sure.:D

I remember using some nm made by Phelps/Dodge in the late 70's. Outer insulation was about a quarter inch thick. Terrible stuff.

I see it every now and then, in fact, I have some in my house. It sure isn't like modern NM cable, that's for sure.

Other vintage NM brands are Anancoda, Ettcoflex, Hatfield and our long defunct local brands Triangle PWC, Narragansett Narax, and AIW. AIW remained but got out of the building wire business but continued making cord products locally until they got bought by Southwire.
