Romex wiring

Does anyone know if romex would be acceptable on a three story motel or hotel according to the 2005 NEC. I have tried to research this but it is not clear to me.

Re: Romex wiring

Up until the 2002 code, there were building height restrictions as to the use of NM cable. In the 2002 and 2005 NEC there are no building height restrictions.

The restrictions are now based on Building Construction Types.

So, you will need to know the building construction type. You may be able to get that from the Building Department or the Architect.

Read the 2 FPNs after 334.10(3)

Pierre is correct.
If it gives you an idea, know that most, if not all, of the Super8 motels are wood construction, wired with NM cable. At least in rural areas. I cannot speak for metro areas.

Re: Romex wiring

You might also consult with the local AHJ, as many municipalities amend the code.

Re: Romex wiring

I've had different sections of the same motel deemed different construction types. On one last year, the rooms were NM cable, but the hallways had to be pipe and MC.

Re: Romex wiring

Lets face it,romex is the cheapest wiring method we have. There are some risks involved in its use. When properly installed and not damaged by screws or nails or over fused it will do just fine. The part that always bothers me is we use the cheap method with most risks in the place we sleep.Romex in a small office should be just fine. However most plans specs forbid it's use.

"When properly installed and not damaged by screws or nails or over fused it will do just fine."

This could be said of any wiring method that is chosen to be installed.

It is not necessarily the wiring method that is a danger, but the installer(s)

Most wiring methods have their issues for one reason or the other, using the correct wiring method for the use based on job conditions and code is what counts. There is a lot of NM cable installed that seems to be just fine.

There are several buildings where I work that are more than 15 stories tall that were wired with NM cable more than 20 years ago and not a problem.
