Roof De-icing equipment

I was wondering if it is necessary to be a licensed electrician to install roof de-icing equipment? I know you have to be to run the branch feeders, but I am unsure about the actual heat tape. After all it does have line voltage running through it.

Welcome to the forum!.

They are all line voltage. The big box stores have the plug connected residential version. Low power output at 5 watts per foot. No license needed there. Raychem makes a few good industrial versions - up to 12 watts per foot. These are cut by the foot, require dedicated circuits and a licensed electrician.
