Can GFCI protection be used instead of GFP protection for fixed outdoor rooftop deicing cables to comply with 426.28?
I have always wondered about that given the following instruction from Raychem heat trace. Can be but may not give the desired results. Those systems inherently have some leakage and a 5 ma GFCI is lilely to trip where as a 30ma GFP will not.
With a required start up megger reading of 1000 meg, it should never trip a GFCI.A clean, dry, properly installed circuit should measure thousands of megohms, regardless of the heating cable length or measuring voltage (0–2500 Vdc). The following criteria are provided to assist in determining the acceptability of an installation where optimum conditions may not apply. All insulation resistance values should be greater than 1000 megohms.
Massachusetts has amended the 2020 Code to require AFCI on all 15 & 20 amp 120 volt branch circuits supplying outlets or devices in a dwelling. The customer wants a switch device inside the dwelling.I am somewhat surprised that your cables or the controlling device would be in an AFCI required area. but we don't see many deicing installs in TN.
