Roof Heat Tape tripping Breaker

Just moved into a house and while the inspection didn't catch this issue (roof was dry during inspection) we just had a first snow so I turned on the heat tape to see if it all was working. the breaker immediately buzzed and tripped. two 20A breakers are dedicated to the system and there are two lighted switches on the wall to turn on the system.
I'd love to hear advice on how to go about finding the problem. . .
