An EC friend of mine is on a project where they are replacing rooftop AC units. he asked me if a light and GFCI receptacle required for these replacements ? I looked in Article 440 but did not notice a requirement.

Maintenance receptacles are required at the same level and within 25' of all HVACR equipment. All of your rooftop units don't necessarily require their own maintenance receptacle, a single receptacle can cover multiple units if they are within range of multiple units. Ref 210.63.

Never heard of a lighting requirement that would apply.

I think he's questioning the fact that now that they are changing the unit out whether or not they need to add one.

If this is in NJ and considered a renovation, then the provisions of the rehab subcode should apply and would exempt the required receptacles. See 5:23-6.8 (d)

I worked on a site where there was a spec that called for a light and recpt. This was a mall project which could be serviced at night. It was a first for me. The GC supplied the light. It was a vapor tight fixture with guard.
I'm not aware if it is an NEC requirement for a light.
We had recpt then FS switch and then the light all in an imc Assembly.

Yes, that was the intent of my post but also wanted to know if it was ever an NEC requirement. Thanks.

Yes, it is in NJ. My friend came back to me and said that he thought that some time ago it was a PSE&G requirement if the unit had gas and was also used for heating. I have no documentation to back that up. Thanks for your reply.

I've seen that set-up in many locations. I never thought about it being an NEC requirement but rather a design spec.

I recall that at one time a light at RTUS was a Mechanical Code requirement. Now I gotta do some research...
