I have spent hours upon hours reading where panelboxes may not be located in homes per NEC, but what room is a safe location. Many inspectors suggest a utility room, but is that really more safe than a clothes closet? I have seen many utility rooms with washers, dryers, ironing boards and clothes racks.

To get to the real answer I need, I am designing a plan with a room where the homes electrical panelboxes are to be located, but you have to access it by walking through a walk in closet or a master bathroom. It is separated by a door from both rooms, and it is large enough to be habitable space. What can I name this room to meet IRC and NEC requirements?

Nope.

Call it what it is,ELECTRIC ROOM.Actually matters less what you call it as long as its not clothes closet or bathroom.I personally dont like idea of it being thru another closet because it will likely get misused with junk in way of door. Can we assume this is an upscale high dollar home ?If not you have spent a lot of money with added door, switch and light fixture. All that space will be getting taxed for many years. And probly get used for storage anyways.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the info. This is a very upscale home, that is the reason for the design.

After reading and thinking, the codes still don't take ignorance into consideration. No place is a safe place for a panelbox if someone piles stuff in front or near them.

No its not, so we count on you to not let this happen. You could spec the location.

I like the idea of a seperate closet. You could make one that was really only as deep as the door(s) that way it couldn't be used for storage, but would still hide the panels.

With the price of wire what it is today. The panel should close to your heaviest loads, Range, Clothes dryer, or electric furnace.and hw tank. That would help me to decide where to install panel.

well, can't u put the panel in the garage or if the basement is not finished, make a back board to mount and support the panel. and where is the meter going? if a finish basement, proably have the h.o. built u a elec closet.
