I have a customer who wants rope lighting installed on a ledge behind molding in a living room. The distance will be around 170ft. Has any one ever had any experience with rope lights good or bad?
Have had good luck with all installations. Make sure that you check the lamp wattage so you don't overload your circuit. You may need an additional recept. in the middle of the run to break up the load. Lamps seem to last for quite a while, then they seem to go out 1 here and there, eventually you may need to replace sections here and there.
Install alot of them.
The ones that we primarily install are 120v. (some are dual voltage 120/240).
They come in a maximum length of 150ft. and I think that is the maximum they reccommend so you would have to use more than one feed receptacle.
They have @ 1/2 watt bulbs spaced every inch. So 150ft would be around 900watts.
We always give them a dedicated circut.
The only drawbacks that we really come accross is wiring sometimes gets tricky just because some people want chasers and such but always want the controllers hidden. Or they want the feed receptacle hidden. Most of the time it isn't a problem, but we'll get someone who wants the rope lights installed in a 3" cove molding where you just can't hide the receptacle. 5" or larger molding shouldn't be a problem.
