Rotary Converter/Air Conditioner ????

Question:
I have Single phase power comming into a home with a 3 phase Air Condtioner. I purchased the appropriate size Rotary Phase converter from Phase o matic company. The problem i'm having is without having the converter running full time, how do I turn the converter on when and only when the Air conditoner needs to run.

I have 70 amp disconect before the inverter. It seems that I need a 70 amp contactor with a 24 volt coil release. That way when somone turns on the thermostat the coil releases and sends power to the converter.

Has anyone ever had this application before and what was the solution??

Thanks
Joey

Have "Y" conductor also pull in a contactor for the roto-phase, and put a time delay relay ahead of the compressor contactor, to allow the roto-phase to come up to speed.

your plan sounds reasonable, but, I would think you might possibly have to add a time dealy function before the a/c acutally kicks in. Just a thought.
secondly, I have doubt the a/c transformer is designed to carry the contactor load, so, very much shooting from the hip, I would see your thermostat pull in a relay to close a contactor (line voltage coil) and then after a delay, turn on the a/c.

edit: sorry Marc, was typing as you answered

Yeah, do these once in a great while for refrigerated display cases in little markets and corner stores, since they usually buy their stuff secondhand. Never for an air conditioner, though. Sounds like somebody screwed up.

Question: Why? How did that happen without a solution already determined?

Years ago, a friend of mine lived in a house that had what appeared to be a #10 conductor alongside the typical 3-conductor service drop, which was solely for the AC compressor. Obviously a high-leg Delta.
