Im going to wire a 1965 Hardinge metal lathe machine in a residential garage. The lathe is a 1.5 Hp 480v machine. I was going to install a 5kva step up 240-480v transformer. From the transformer run into a combination disconnect 480 volt across the line starter. From the starter go in the 4 kva rotary converter and then into the disconnect for the lathe. Does anybody see anything wrong with this installation?

Re: Rotary phase converters

Have you compared the cost of the rotary phase converter with that of an ovrsized VFD? The VFD can convert single to three phase with the added advantage of speed control.

Re: Rotary phase converters

Don I was going to suggest that. For residential wells, the motors are three phase with a single phase input, via a VFD. The advantage is you don't need a big air tank and get far better pressure control
