rough in brick wall

i am roughing in an old row home in the city near my house, i have to put a receptacle and a cable cox in a wall that is brick. i guess i have to trench a raceway for the two runs, i am not sure if i can use romex (nmc) or do i have to use mc? and what of the cable? do i have to protect both runs with something, the wall will be skimmed for the finished product.

There are several wiring methods that you can use in a shallow channel that will be plastered over. This is covered in the uses permitted/uses not permitted for each wiring method. There is no general requirement that it be protected by any means. A "wall chaser" is the typical tool to make the groove.
