Rough in electricity

I have a mother in law suite that is being remodeled. I took it down to a shell and reframed, and rewired everything. I just had the drywall completed and decided to attempt installing the switches and outlets myself. I have can lights that I've installed, I installed the switch for them, the switch was hot per my meter, but nothing came on. I disconnected the can light and placed my test meter directly to the can plug, still nothing. Also all of my light switches are showing hot but not all of my sockets. Am I missing something?
