I Am Connecting An Rtd Temp. Detector In A Class 1 Div 1 Location To An Heat Trace Controller That Is In A Non Rated Area. My Question Is Do I Need An I/s Barrier In The "safe" Area I.e The Controller.

I used to make equiptment used in Class 1 Division 1 Group C & D classified locations. Our equipment had a varity of sensors including RTD and K thermo sensors. All the sensors had to be in an intrinsic safe barrier.

As I remember, Class 1, Div 2 is dust and water proof, so the answer is no. But the connections on the control panel and the RTD must comply to the new classification, which is simple and inexpensive in comparision to intrinsic barriers and C1,D1 connectors.
