rubber cord volt rateing

Sxxx cord rated 300 volt or 600 volt, is that 300 volt line to line or line to ground,

i had a mechanic ask me this, because he seen a cord rated at 300volts runing a 480 3 phase fan.

It's a violation, you would need 600 volt cord.

110.4 Voltages.
Throughout this Code, the voltage considered shall be that at which the circuit operates. The voltage rating of electrical equipment shall not be less than the nominal voltage of a circuit to which it is connected.
Equipment. A general term including material, fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires (fixtures), apparatus, and the like used as a part of, or in connection with, an electrical installation.
The circuit operates at 480 volts the cord is equipment and must be rated at least 480 volts.

they have lots of it, i work in an industrial plant, most of the 300v is heavy duty rating and yellow. most of the 600v is extra heavy duty and black, but thats here.
