Running conduit/cable in posts.

I have a project where some illuminated signs are supported on rack supported by 3x3 stainless steel posts. Can I run cable for power to the signs through the posts or do I need to have conduit installed in the posts first?

Re: Running conduit/cable in posts.

yes

where are the joints made and how do you have access to them?

how are you getting to the inside of the 3x3 posts?

how are you getting from the 3x3 posts to the sign?

is anyone likely to drill into the posts for any reason?

gmstephens,

This also sounds like a seperate structure supplied thru an existing building.

Disconnect and GES might be required.

Re: Running conduit/cable in posts.

I'm not sure about the nature of the posts you are dealing with, but you could fish MC cable up through them if you ahve any doubts as to their suitability as an apropiate raceway.

I'll takc another question on to yours: where in the NEC does it allow one to fish THHN conductors up a typical outdoor lighting pole? Are they listed for the use?

Re: Running conduit/cable in posts.

Is this a rack system, with hollow tubin that make up the rack system? If that is the case, I am not too sure if this would be permitted - that is, installing conductors on the inside of the tubing that makes up the rack.
Also read 410.15(B)(1) exception

Re: Running conduit/cable in posts.

Thank you all.

To answer some of the questions. The posts are stainless steel tubing (and now they are 6"x6"). They are indoors and support monitors. The architect will drill 2" holes at the top and bottom of each post for the wiring and make the end cap at top removable. I can't figure out how to terminate the conduit at either end, so I was thinking of running MC cable from a box under the floor and through the post to a box mounted near the hole at the top.

How does that sound?
