Can someone point me where in the code says the ground wire needs to run with the feeder wires in the same conduit? Thank you

Are you're asking about the possibility of running the EGC on the outside of the conduit?

Basic rule:
300.3
(B) Conductors of the Same Circuit. All conductors of the same circuit and, where used, the grounded conductor and all equipment grounding conductors and bonding conductors shall be contained within the same raceway, auxiliary gutter,cable tray, cablebus assembly, trench, cable, or cord, unless otherwise permitted in accordance with 300.3(B)(1)through(B)(4).
There are some exceptions for grounding conductors which likely won't apply but you can check the references.

Bonding jumpers are permitted on the outside of a raceway but are limited to 6' in length. {250.102(E)(2)}

An EGC run on the ouside - over 6 ft- wiil have a very high impedance as the magnetic fields don't cancel. It will look OK, but is almost worthless as an EGC.
