Do any of you all do electrical work in the outer lying, down I-66 counties around DC like loudoun and fauqier (sp?) counties. Are the pricing rates as hi as in DC? In DC the going middle ground rate is about $70 per hr for a journeyman and a helper.

Don't know where you got $70 as a middle rate in DC for a J-man and helper. My latest survey (I do exactly what 77401 suggests about once every 6 months) of hourly rates for service work are about $85-110 per hour for a single man (no explicit qualifications). This is in the DC metro area. I am charging $80/hour.

Friend of mine works that area, he charges $120 for service calls, and $84 for planned jobs, when he works the metro area, he gets $150 for service calls and 110 for planned jobs, he has been in business for about 20 years, so i assume, he knows the area rates, that is his rate for one man, he said the area is full of low ballers, like anywhere else.

Try to establish what works for you, not what others are charging, it's easy to come up with a rate, just take your overhead and operating expenses, add your direct labor, put in your desired profit, and there is your rate, what it costs you to stay in business.

Why worry about what other contractors charge? If their rates are $40 an hour are you going to be at $39 and compete? Some people think they need to be the cheapest in town so people will use them. I honestly say when I first started 15 years ago this was my way of thinking also. Alot of times this does get your foot in the door. It just won't pay your overhead once you begin to develop some overhead costs.
We try to know what our overhead is and charge what we need to to make profit. The trick to being competitive is cutting the wasteful spending so you keep your overhead down. Key word there is wasteful.
But if you must know, we are $85 an hour for a two man crew which is actually a tad high for this area.
