S.O. Cord

What is S.O. cord? Is this a particular type of cable (physical construction), or is it a field term for describing a general type of cable.

Does the NEC say anything specific about protecting these cables?

So an S.O. cord would have a lower ampacity than a cable of equivelent size at 75deg?

For instance in table 400.5 #2 S.O. has ampacity rating of 85 where a #2 AWG cable is rated for 115A.
