I thought the safe-lok GFI was designed to prevent miss wiring of the receptacle. If line is connected to load side rec works, but no protection. What's up with that?

If a new style GFCI receptacle is wired line to load, the local receptacle openings will continue to work with out GFCI protection, however all down stream devices will not work. Also, the GFCI can not be reset.

This situation occurs because the local receptacle openings and "load" terminals are both connected after the GFCI opening contacts Picture GFCI like this:
Line terminals -> GFCI contacts -> receptacle openings -> load terminals.
