Safety Cable for Ceiling or Beam Mounted Devices

Can you tell me please if there are any codes, or standards for the use of secondary safety cabling i.e. aircraft wire for devices mounted overhead to beams or ceilings. I have heard there is a State code in California that if a device weighs more than 8 lb. it must have a secondary safety cable attached to prevent the device falling if it comes unattached. But I cannot find that code or any other that governs these installations of overhead equipment. Thank you very much for any information you can share or point me too.
