Have any of you gone through the process of getting registered with the SAM program to be able to contract with the government to do work?

My understanding is that any work that an agency needs done can be performed by a contractor of their choosing up to $2500. Anything more than that requires it to go out to bid.

In order for a contractor to bid on a government job (>$2500) they have to be registered with the SAM website (gov't website). It's a fairly long involved process!

Just curious if it's worth my time to pursue being a small Mom & Pop operation?!

sure is,
Get registered if you can as a SBA disadvantaged business. You get preferential treatment.

disadvantaged?

disadvantaged?

I'm not sure what is meant by "disadvantaged" ?

I didn't see that term in my research on the topic...

They call it SBA sect 8 , small businesses certification.

You need to be minority, or woman , or veteran , or disabled. ( majority owned 51 % )

This stuff will go to bid and you will never see it on the regular site.

I just applied a couple days ago. Takes about 90 minutes to go through the application and it is online.

I don't intend to bid or work on any Federally owned projects in the near future, but have a client that is wanting to do some work that will be using Federal funding (economic development grants/loans/etc. not exactly sure on the details but is a Federal program) and I can not bid on this project if I am not registered. Their economic development coordinator that is helping them with this process also helped me get going on what I needed to do for this. I also needed to register with dun & bradstreet, which needed to be done before doing the SAM registration.

DUNS number

DUNS number

Just got my DUNS number before the weekend... Sounds like I have to complete the registration process after 24-48 hours of getting this number (no sooner than that).

It's kindve a long process and I'm not sure in the end what I'll get out of it, but my work has a few slow days so at least I feel like I'm being productive :?...

I don't think you can work on any federally funded projects without being registered. This generally hasn't been a problem for me as we don't have much for federally owned properties in the area. Federal government offices that are here are mostly leased and if I work in them I am working for the owner not the the tenant. Just happens I have a client that is getting a loan or grant to do some work to their building that is somehow being funded through federal government and I have to register before I am authorized to do this project under the terms of the grant/loan.

I don't know how long this has been a requirement, as I am pretty sure I have done a project or two in the past that probably would require registration if done today.
