i was at a house doing some work today and i found a few things you guys would like to see

this device is mounted on a joist above the furnace. when the little lead thing melts it closes a set of contacts that cause a 12 volt bell to ring upstairs. i shorted out the terminals on the back and it still works

heres the panel. its a mess and no main bonding jumper installed yet it passed inspection

hope you guys enjoy this!!!

Thanks for posting! The fire alarm is a classic! I enjoy seeing old rare items like this. I was in an attic of a old home once that had a couple of fire extinguishers:-? they were glass globes that were red, and filled with some type of liquid?? They had some form of lead trip trigger that would release a small hammer device to break the glass globe. I wish I had a picture to post. Sounds like a "snake oil" item!!

they had those inside of a house i worked at. they didnt have the hammer but they were red glass globes that you throw at the fire and it breaks and the fire goes out. i believe those things are pretty toxic

tetrochloridecyclene, ok some thing like that. They were put above boilers in basements a lot. If the fire or boiler had a problem the lead would melt and the globe would fall break and suffocate the fire. The only bad thing, it produces mustard gas if I remember correctly. So yea HIGHLY TOXIC but sought after by people who collect that stuff ME ME ME ME ME ME ME Hint Hint. They can get very ornate looking.

I often wondered what the liquid was?

It's carbon tetrachloride. The carcinogenic stuff once considered a wonder chemical. Puts out fires, dry-cleans clothes, and cleans electrical contacts. Oh yeah, and gives you cancer, too!

The old Pella, Iowa firehouse (now a museum) has a red metal box on display with a set of carbon-tet globes in it. One of the fire extinguisher companies in Des Moines had one on display until recently (somebody broke it...oops!)

I used to know of some houses in Council Bluffs Iowa that had those bombs hanging in the attic, too.

If you ever see one of those globes call in the fire department to dispose of them. If you break it the chemical reaction while producing whatever gas it may is used to suck out all of the oxygen out of the room and it does this very quickly and effectively as a fire sufficator and human sufficator too if you happen to be in the room.

I see those glass globes on a regular basis, many of the older homes
we work on have them over the furnace
My boss has a very large collection of them. I will try to get a few pictures to post,
