What determines when something is subject to physical damage? Is there a specific section or guideline that clarifies the use of schedule 80 pvc when coming above ground in a conduit run, not for direct buried cables?

Short answer, no. This is a determination that is made by the AHJ. The code does not clearly define what constitutes "subject to physical damage".

The UL white book listing requires Sch 80 to be used on a pole- its essentially saying that Sch 80 is = to RMC. Other than that the AHJ would make the call.

We have one jurisdiction that says you must use schedule 80 whenever it emerges from the ground. I think that it is a very wide open for interpretation rule.

Maybe its our own 110.3 ! Catch 22 !

The power of the modern day weed wacker is really the problem !

Besides just get them out of the ground, 90? then vertical, maybe include that cool look'n PVC expansion...

Yes, there are cases where they're interchangeable but I don't think that anyone can disagree that RMC is much stronger.
