Schooling opinions?

Was wondering what everyones view is on this online course through Penn Foster http://www.pennfoster.edu/electrician/index.html

I have been in the trade for 4 years and am currently working for a contractor in Palm Beach County, FL. I have recently been put into a lead position on a rather large shopping center and would like to have myself better educated and go for my J-card. Unfortunately I don't have a highschool diploma/GED or the time for traditional classes.

Would anyone recommend this program through Penn Foster? If not, is there another online program that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance!

That really looks like a starter course, not an exam prep course. If you've been in the trade four years, you should look fo exam prep courses.

Mike Holt offers exam prep material at www.mikeholt.com, others may chime in with their preferred material.

First let me commend you for your pursuit of any education.

As far as on-line, well in your case, you could pick up some books and read about specific situations that you might have to run up against.
One that comes to mind is sold in the big box stores, and at the supply house:

Ugly's Electrical Reference (2005)
By: George V. Hart & Sammie Hart ( arranged / and selective reading of the NFPA-70)

It also includes a lot of electrician type tips / Tricks / Etc ? and very
handy for a lot day to day situations. And there quite a few others very similar.

While your at the supply house ask if anyone?s teaching a code class or
Prep-course for the state test.

Yes I would strongly consider some of Mike holts books as mentioned earlier.

I have several, and a Google Search will also list a lot of others?

What's your Library card status? Since you found this site
You can also browse your public library on-line. You might also consider
Used Book Stores, and visit several.

Good Luck

Congrats on trying to better youself
IMHO stay away from courses/classes through so called online schools.
Besides doing what the other people posted, ask questions here, you'll be suprised what you will learn. This forum has made me look in my code book more in the last 6 months, than I have in the last couple of years.

I attend Penn Foster online and have been an electrician for over 20 years. I picked Penn Foster because it is transferable credits. The reason for schooling in my case is not to become certified but rather to learn the theory behind the scene. If you are looking to become an engineer then go to a college. If you are trying to better yourself as an electrician then take courses that will enable you to become licenced
